Q & A

What led you to do a surrogacy?

After I became a mother, the very thought that any loving, wonderful, deserving people may not be able to become parents broke my heart. I knew for many years, while completing my own family, that someday I would love to be a part of helping someone else bring their children home.

How did you decide to work with Creative Family Connections?

I researched for about a year on social media and by talking to other surrogates and parents who had their children via surrogacy. It became clear that, although some were successful independently, there were far too many sad cases of good intent ending in heartbreak. Both IPs and Surrogates have a lot to consider before taking this journey and being unprepared can have tragic – or at a minimum, extremely stressful – consequences. I wanted to be absolutely certain my health was perfect and that the intended parent(s) I may work with were stable and able to care for their future children. After deciding against going independent, I then spoke to about a dozen agencies. I stopped my research the day after I spoke to Samara from CFC for the first time. Speaking with her I felt at ease. I heard and felt secure that they were looking out for the very best interest of the parents as well as myself. They were thoughtful in the profile they showed me and were very supportive of not “matching” with someone who wasn’t the perfect fit. I never felt pressured. When I spoke to my intended Dads for the first time, I was 100% sure these were the people I was going to be able to help complete their family. I am grateful every day to be in their lives.

What was it like during the pregnancy?

Melissa has been such a source of knowledge and optimism throughout the whole process. She is very understanding about the “hurry up and wait” period in the beginning, and is extremely quick to respond to any questions or concerns. She handles insurance and any other financial issues seamlessly and allows me to focus on my family and a healthy pregnancy with the IPs. My relationship with the Dads went from those first-date-type nervous emails and texts, to a genuine friendship and all around easy relationship. CFC values open communication and encourages it from day one. Being open with the Dads and listening to their hopes and concerns has truly allowed us to develop a safe and rewarding relationship. We love knowing that Melissa is there to handle all the details, from advocating for them during the hospital stay, to taking care of pre-birth orders etc, it takes so much of the burden away.

What do you think it will be like seeing your IPs hold their baby for the first time?

This is a hard question, because I look forward to every aspect of that amazing time! The parents love each other so much and are already dads, just without the baby in their arms. They are so different and I am willing to bet one of them will be in tears while the other is simply speechless. It will be a moment I’ll treasure forever and I will always be grateful they trusted me to be a part of something so miraculous. We text daily and Skype every Sunday, and we already have plans on how we will stay in touch after their baby is home 🙂 I was always very open to as much or as little involvement as the parents wanted, after all, it is their pregnancy, their birth, and their baby, and they have to share so much that I would completely understand if they wanted to keep everything they could private. However, I must say how rewarding and beautiful it is that the guys wanted me in their lives as much more than just a carrier and I know we will forever be in touch.
