How Much Do Surrogates Make?

When searching for information about how surrogates are paid, you’ll find that some surrogacy agencies promise flat rates starting at $45,000 and more for gestational carriers. However, be careful as you research surrogate income. Some agencies may display misleading numbers, promising higher rates than what their first-time surrogate compensation rates really are. Other agencies offer compensation packages that are too low compared to current compensation standards. Read more below to see what competitive base pay compensations we offer to first-time surrogates with Creative Family Connections!

A good rule of thumb is, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is! In the world of surrogacy, base pays at other agencies range from $45,000 to $55,000 or more — plus reimbursement for additional expenses — depending on the specific details of your surrogacy journey.

What Does Surrogate Pay Include?

While surrogacy is a rewarding and incredible gift, it is also a complex medical and legal process that requires significant time and energy along the way. As a potential surrogate, it’s only natural to wonder about the average pay for surrogates. For most U.S. surrogacy agencies, intended parents provide three types of surrogacy pay in exchange for your dedication, time, and sacrifice. These include:

  • Competitive base pay compensation throughout the pregnancy.
  • Additional stipends based on various aspects of the journey.
  • Coverage of all surrogacy journey support and reimbursement for expenses incurred during the process.

The average pay for surrogates can vary based on whether you are undergoing a repeat surrogacy journey or are a first-time gestational surrogate. Every surrogacy agency is different, so the best way to know for sure is to speak to a surrogacy professional. That way, you can feel informed to make the best decision for you and your family.

Surrogacy-Related Expenses

As a surrogate, the intended parents will cover many of your expenses — from your medical procedures to screening costs and your legal fees. In addition, you’ll receive a monthly payment. Remember that the base compensation is in addition to certain stipends like maternity clothing, transfer stipends, meal stipends while traveling for the medical screening and embryo transfer, and more!

Like your base compensation, any surrogacy-related expenses that your intended parents will pay should be decided on early in the process and outlined in your surrogacy legal contract.

Your monthly allowance during the pregnancy will usually cover:

  • Mileage to and from your doctor’s appointments.
  • Telephone calls or shipping for legal documents.
  • Prenatal vitamins and other health supplies.
  • Other small miscellaneous/discretionary pregnancy expenses.
  • A massage appointment with OBGYN support

You’ll also receive gestational surrogate pay that covers any lost income or limited paid time off you and your spouse incur from missing work due to surrogacy appointments. Depending on your contract, you could receive additional compensation for certain elements of the surrogacy medical process, like stipends for a mock cycle, for just one example.

What are some possible additional stipends that are separate from my base pay?

  • $500 Exclusivity Sign-On Bonus after pre-screening
  • $1,000 Maternity clothing allowance
  • $10,000 additional for twin pregnancy ($20,000 additional in the rare event of a triplet pregnancy)

Real Life Examples

SCROLL

Carrie from Alaska

Ashley from Arizona

Haley from Maryland

As a first-time surrogate, Carrie would receive a base compensation of $55,000. She does not have health insurance at the time of applying, but with CFC’s assistance, obtains an ACA insurance policy. She does not have a mock cycle as part of her medical screening. The second dual embryo transfer is successful ($1,000 x 2) and she carries a twin surrogate pregnancy ($10,000). She receives a maternity clothing allowance around the second trimester ($1,000). Based on the timing of the heartbeat ultrasound, she receives 11 months of her monthly allowance during the pregnancy and post delivery ($300 x 11). She has a C-section delivery as deemed necessary by her OBGYN ($3,000). She receives 6 weeks of net actual lost wages post delivery (lost wages not included in the approximate pay total) before being cleared to return to work. Carrie decides to pump breastmilk post delivery for 3 months for her intended parents, and her intended parents are grateful to receive it ($350 x 12 weeks = $4,200). She receives lost wages throughout the journey per her surrogate contract.

Approximate Total Surrogate Pay Received: $78,500+

As a first-time surrogate, Ashley would receive a base compensation of $55,000. She decides to only move forward with CFC versus two other agencies she was considering, responds promptly with all pre-screening steps, and therefore opts into receiving the Exclusivity Sign-On Bonus ($500). She has a two-week mock cycle of the cycling medications as part of her medical screening ($350). Her parents, who typically watch her children on occasion, are out of town at the same time as the medical screening, so Ashley hires an overnight sitter ($250, not included in total below). The first embryo transfer is (hooray!) successful ($1,000 x 1). She receives a maternity clothing allowance around the second trimester ($1,000). Based on the timing of the heartbeat ultrasound, she receives 12 months of the monthly allowance ($300 x 12). Her OBGYN explains to Ashley and her intended parent that it is medically recommended to have an amniocentesis to see what may be going on with baby ($1,500) based on the results of previous non-invasive genetic testing. Her OBGYN also requires two weeks of bedrest, so she receives housekeeping assistance ($100 x 2, not included in total below). During the third trimester, Ashley submits documentation to show 3 weeks of additional housekeeping assistance ($100 x 3, not included in total below). She decides to pump post delivery for her local hospital, and her intended parents decide to stick to formula. She and her husband receive lost wages throughout the journey per their surrogate contract (lost wages not included in the total).

Approximate Total Surrogate Pay Received: $62,950+

As a second-time CFC surrogate, Haley would receive $60,000 as her base pay. She decides to only work with CFC and assist in the pre-screening process, so she opt into the Exclusivity Sign-On Bonus ($500). She has a mock cycle as part of her medical screening ($350). The first cycle has to be cancelled after the last lining check appointment due to embryo thawing issues at the IVF clinic ($500). The second embryo transfer is successful ($1,000 x 1). She receives a maternity clothing allowance around the second trimester ($1,000). She receives 11 months of the monthly allowance after heartbeat ultrasound confirmation ($300 x 11). She has a complication-free vaginal delivery and receives 4 weeks of net actual lost wages post delivery (lost wages not included in the total) before being cleared to return to work. Haley decides to pump breastmilk post delivery for 4 months, and her intended parent is so grateful and agrees with the arrangement ($350 x 8 weeks).

Approximate Total Surrogate Pay Received: $71,450+

Repeat Surrogacy Journeys

When you’re a repeat surrogate, you already know the ropes and have proven your ability and dedication to carry a gestational pregnancy to term safely. You know the surrogacy process, and that will make a subsequent journey much easier! Because of this, you’ll be in high demand with intended parents who are looking for a caring, responsible person to carry their baby.

Because of your valuable experience and knowledge, surrogacy professionals and intended parents are happy to pay a higher repeat surrogate compensation. Different agencies offer different rates, meaning some may provide a higher flat rate for experienced surrogates, while others may provide an additional base pay increase per surrogate pregnancy.

What about COVID-19? Can I still apply to be a surrogate at Creative Family Connections?

Yes! There are plenty of parts of the surrogacy process we can work on together from the comfort of your home, including meeting your intended parent or parents! Earn $1,500 as a surrogate before you are pregnant! Our current Exclusive Stay-at-home Surrogate Stipend is $500 for qualified surrogate candidates. This bonus is paid after our pre-screening has been completed and there has been an official in-home interview with someone on our team. Also, as a CFC surrogate, you will receive $1,000 from your surrogate base compensation after successfully passing psychological and medical screening, as well as finalizing your surrogacy contract with your intended parents. This $1,000 will be sent to you via direct deposit.
